Had a wonderful experience at Chirori based off a recommendation from our guesthouse. Very welcoming staff, food was excellent and all staff had a good level of English if your Japanese is no good! Beer was flowing in ice cold glasses, perfect for a hot summer evening. Highly recommended if you're in this part of Kyoto!

Masako is a phenomenal host. She's been running the place for 19 years and the food here hits the perfect spot after a long day exploring. Nomeri and Hutari from her team are extremely friendly and warm. The food itself is fantastic, I took whatever they recommended (picture attached) and it was better than all the food I had in Tokyo. If you're looking for a late night meal or just want a place to eat, stop searching and come here. You'll have a great time a fantastic meal.

Delicious okonomiyaki and super friendly staff! They prepared a vegetarian version for me, which was super considerate. Most traditional places in Japan never offer to do this, so I was very happy of course. At the time I was there, all the costumers were locals, which I loved :)

Such a wonderful experience -- the food was excellent and surprisingly cheap, the atmosphere was somewhat intimate and very authentic, but the service was what was really incredible. Two of the women that work here speak fluent English -- I've been eating at restaurants twice a day for the past two weeks and, as an English speaker, this is the first time I've ever actually been able to have a conversation with someone. The staff was very friendly, giving food recommendations as well as a list of places to visit, and it's clear that all the locals also enjoyed speaking with them. A bit off the beaten path, but a really great find and worth a visit!

For my first meal in Kyoto I had the good fortune to stumble into this shop for dinner. They were so nice and friendly! The food was excellent and they made me feel very welcome. Don’t forget to bring cash and they do not accept credit cards.

I was dining solo and the lovely ladies running this restaurant were so welcoming. The food (a vegi okonomiaki) was delicious and very affordable. Loved this place !! This area of Kyoto does not seem to have many tourists - I hope more people will visit. It's an interesting and historical area - without the crowds.
